The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Program is transforming how residents and visitors experience travel across the state. FDOT ITS Program: Smarter Traffic, Safer Roads
The ITS Program uses real-time data, sensors, and communication networks to monitor traffic conditions, manage congestion, and respond to incidents more efficiently. For example, dynamic message signs and the Florida 511 system provide up-to-the-minute travel information, helping drivers avoid delays and make smarter route choices. The data, sensors, and communication networks all feed into the Intelligent Transportation Systems Facility Management (ITSFM) system. This is a cloud-based software platform, developed by FDOT, to manage and maintain the state’s network of smart infrastructure.
ITSFM tracks and manages infrastructure assets like traffic signals, fiber optic cables, sensors, and ITS field devices. It uses advanced GPS mapping tools to collect, store, and update data in real time. This gives FDOT and its partners accurate, up-to-date information about the location and condition of critical transportation infrastructure, which helps ensure:
