The PEDSAFE Greenway deployments introduced an innovative pedestrian and bicycle collision avoidance system that utilizes connected vehicle (CV) technologies to reduce the occurrence of crashes at high-crash-rate locations. Also implemented was a program designed to increase throughput capacity and reduce congestion by optimizing traffic signal operations.
The goal of this project was to implement innovative technology to reduce the occurrence of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes at multiple locations in the City of Orlando with historically high incident rates involving university students.
The project deployed multiple systems in and around the University of Central Florida. Technologies used included CV systems, roadside units (RSUs) and onboard units (OBUs) at 33 signalized intersections, advanced sensors for real-time data on turning movements, saturation flow rates, and signal timing, and audible alerts for pedestrians at crossings.
